The flight of the kibbutz children has led to an ever growing number of kibbutzim becoming geriatric institutions. With few idealists joining and the continued unselective acceptance of new members to somehow keep up the numbers, the periphery will continue to grow and eventually lead to the demise of the kibbutz as a communal egalitarian society. Conclusion We asked at the outset, does the demise of the kibbutz matter. I believe it does. There is no scientific proof that human beings are naturally co-operative, peaceful, egalitarian or mutually supportive.
