They want copper the first 18"of a gas water heater because that part of the vent gets the hottest, especially when the vent is cold and the heater fires After that you must still stay at least 6" away from the vent pipe.
At least one pex manufacturer doesn't give two craps if you install pex directly to an electric water heater. Some codes do not allow it because their ignorant and the code is not perfect and thats one of a few reasons why its always changing.
Apr 24, Here is the code: Water Heater Connections. PEX shall not be installed within the first 18 inches ( mm) of piping connected to a water heater. I also contacted bradford white, the service tech I spoke to, didn't think it would be a problem. With the home-run system, you install a manifold in the utility room or some area that's close to the main water line and water heater, and run a separate PEX tube to each fixture as shown above. This system uses more tubing, but is fast and only requires two connections: one at Author: The Family Handyman. Jan 13, I need to run water to a bathroom addition I'm building. I'm using a 3/4" PEX run with 1/2" branching off to fixtures. I need to tie into the water pipes and would like to do that at the water heater so as to bypass the rest of the house plumbing which has 1/2" hot water pipe.
Last edited: Feb 10, Wrong hackney sorry to say i found this out the hard way! The 18" is to keep the plastic from melting from the hot water backing into the pipes this goes for gas or electric both by the time hot water rises 18" from the heater heat loss is enough to cool the water to below the melting point of plastic piping ie, cpvc, pex, sch.

Tie PEX into water pipes at water heater? Hows this look?
Do you have a problem with comprehension? The copper is to protect the plastic from the hottest water at the top of the tank, NOT to "Cool" down the tank.

Zurn PEX has brass male and female threaded adapters and swivel adapters that can be used for this application. Zurn PEX must be kept at least 6" away from the exhaust vent of a gas-fired water heater.
This is easily accomplished by using flexible water heater connectors.
When the inlet and outlet connections are well away from the exhaust vent, such as most heaters with side connections, Zurn PEX may be connected directly to the water heater. More from Viega It is chlorine resistance rated for both traditional and continuous recirculation PEX CL5 applications.
The high temperatures of these appliances can damage the tubing. Due to the closed combustion.
Further to your question Ed was there a dielectic fitting there because although the pic is quite blurry it looks as though the fittings are galv. Why would you need a dielectric fitting between plastic and galvanized? My question is regarding what looks like a valve at the hot water T.
Hook up water heater with pex
What was that for? There are pressure limits on Pex that the manufacture specify. There should be no need for one.

Looking for water to the pex piping shall conform to replace a suitable for standard fixtures. Their temp is a common sense approach to the pex tubing. The Pex piping is rated by code, to withstand the °F temperatures for up to 48 hours. However, national code does not allow for PEX to be used within 18 inches of the water heater. If the plumber ran the pipe all the way to the water heater, then it is not up .
So what type of valve is it since temperature sets the pressure? Would it not need to be installed within the water heater to get a proper temperature reading? In all the new construction that is using PEX, I have never seen a 2nd valve like this, but then I also have not looked at the specs for the TPR valves. What is the allowed temperature on the TPR?
In Quebec, the 18" rule does not apply if its an electric water heater even though it does in the U. Water heaters that my water heater, for underground water within.
